What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy, also known as physical therapy, is a healthcare discipline dedicated to helping individuals restore, maintain, and enhance their physical function, movement, and overall well-being. Physiotherapists are highly trained professionals skilled in assessing, diagnosing, and treating a wide range of conditions affecting the body, including musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiovascular disorders.
Preparing for Your First Physiotherapy Appointment
- 1. Wear Comfortable Clothing: Choose loose, comfortable attire that allows easy movement and provides access to the area being treated.
- 2. Bring Relevant Documents: Include medical records, referral letters, imaging reports (e.g., X-rays, MRIs), and a list of current medications, if applicable.
- 3. Think About Your Goals: Identify what you want to achieve through physiotherapy, such as pain relief, improved mobility, or enhanced function.
- 4. Prepare Your History: Be ready to explain your symptoms, including when they started, what triggers or worsens them, and any activities that are challenging.
- 5. Arrive Early: Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork and settle in before your session.
- 6. Bring Questions: Write down any questions or concerns you’d like to discuss with your physiotherapist.
What does a physiotherapy appointment involve?

Brief History
Your physiotherapist will ask detailed questions about the onset of your symptoms, their progression, and any activities or movements that exacerbate or alleviate your discomfort. This in-depth dialogue is essential for identifying the root cause of your issues and forming the basis for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan.

Physical Assessment
The assessment will include a physical examination to evaluate your posture, range of motion, strength, flexibility, and functional movements. Your physiotherapist may also perform palpation, applying hands-on techniques to assess the condition of muscles, ligaments, and bones. This tactile evaluation helps identify areas of dysfunction and informs the most appropriate course of treatment.

Treatment Plan
Based on the findings from the assessment, you and your physiotherapist will collaboratively establish a tailored treatment plan, which will include the following components:
- Treatment Techniques: Depending on your condition, your treatment plan will incorporate a variety of techniques, such as manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, stretching, strengthening, posture correction, gait training, and modalities (e.g., ultrasound, dry needling, acupuncture, shockwave therapy).
- Goal Setting: Together, you will establish SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals for your rehabilitation, ensuring clear and measurable objectives for your recovery.
- Home Exercise Program: To enhance your recovery, your physiotherapist will prescribe a home exercise regimen tailored to your needs, including stretches, mobility exercises, and strengthening routines. These exercises complement your in-clinic sessions and are essential to achieving optimal results.
- Progress Monitoring: Throughout your treatment, your physiotherapist will regularly assess your progress, adjust your treatment plan as needed, and provide ongoing support to ensure continuous alignment with your rehabilitation goals.
- Education:Your physiotherapist will also provide guidance on pain management, optimal movement patterns, posture correction, lifestyle adjustments, and more
Meet The Team

Sean McGrath
I’m a physiotherapist from Ireland, now based in Vancouver. I graduated with a BSc in Physiotherapy from the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin and worked in one of Dublin’s top sports clinics, treating athletes from soccer, rugby, and GAA. I’ve also worked as a team physio with elite-level sports teams.
My journey into physiotherapy started with my own shoulder injuries during my hurling career. After surgeries and long rehab, physio helped me rebuild trust in my body — and that inspired me to do the same for others.
I’m passionate about helping people get back to the activities they enjoy without pain or limitation. Outside the clinic, I still play field sports, snowboard in winter, and am currently learning to ice skate — slowly, and without brakes!
“I have a passion for helping others overcome any movement, activity or pain limitations they may have.”

James Linehan
I’m a physiotherapist from Ireland, now based in Vancouver. I studied at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, where I was awarded the Anne O’Brien Prize for top clinical performance, and previously completed a degree in athletic therapy. I have over six years of experience working in rehab and performance.
Before moving here, I worked in a leading sports clinic in Dublin alongside Sean and with senior GAA and professional football teams. My own injuries led me into physio, and now I enjoy helping others get back to the activities they love.
Outside the clinic, I stay active with soccer, gym training, and getting outdoors.
“For me, physiotherapy is about helping people get back to the sport, work, or lifestyle they enjoy. That’s what it’s all about.”

Itza Ruiz
I’m originally from Mexico. Coffee lover, you’ll often find me exploring local coffee shops and enjoying some time to myself there. I also like staying active, whether it’s going for a run or doing a good functional workout, and I love making the most of Vancouver’s mix of nature and city life. Traveling is another favorite of mine. I usually end up being the travel planner for my family and friends.
At Complete Physio, I work in a marketing and admin role, helping to keep things running smoothly behind the scenes and making sure more people get to know about the great work our team does. Whether it’s organizing schedules, supporting the team, or helping with social media and marketing campaigns, I love being part of the energy that keeps the clinic moving forward.

My Why
I was playing competitive Hurling when I first dislocated my left shoulder, not too long after that I dislocated my right shoulder. I had surgery on both shoulders as well as intensive physiotherapy for large periods of my playing career. My story is of a typical ‘failed athlete’ working in the health and fitness industry. My dreams were to play competitive hurling at the highest level for as long as I could and I felt my injuries hindered the pursuit of that goal. This left me feeling frustrated with a loss of trust in my body’s capacity to tolerate the physical demands of the sport. Physiotherapy helped me overcome those obstacles and I decided I wanted to be the person to give that positive experience to others. That led me down the path of pursuing a career in physiotherapy. I see my role as helping people get back to the activities they enjoy doing, without pain, worry or limitations when participating in those activities.

Outside the clinic
Currently I play Soccer, Hurling and Gaelic Football. I want to continue to play field sports for as long as my body will allow me. In the winter I enjoy snowboarding in the winter and also trying new activities. I have recently been learning to ice skate and have a pipe dream of playing ice hockey. It is not looking good so far as I have no brakes, but who knows!
